Betsy Owen

Betsy is Colonial Nursery School’s first ever Assistant Director, but really she is much than that. Betsy came to Colonial as a parent, but the board quickly realized her talents were needed at the school. She served as our Outreach Chair for two years, and was the driving force behind a school wide renovation effort to further support our desire to offer a unique learning environment. One that embodies the educational models we feel are important at our school, elements found in Reggio Emilia inspired schools, Waldorf Schools, and the Montessori and Sudbury models. She draws from a vast array of progressive school models and seeks to prepare children for the next step in their educational journey.

Central to her work, is her background in Museum Education. While at the Long Island Children’s Museum, she researched and developed hands-on programming for children and families. She also worked in the film industry building sets in LA and worked as set designer for theater productions on both coasts. If you can dream it, she can build it.

Studied illustration at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan and holds an Early Childhood Credential from the State of Maryland.
