Our Mission
Colonial Nursery School is committed to bringing children and
families together under the guidance of trained, experienced,
and creative teachers and staff. We strive to promote
self-confidence in our children and a sense of wonder about
their world.
By introducing and developing concepts and skills through language arts, science, mathematics, and social studies, as well as art, drama, music, and free play, we provide a safe atmosphere in which the child can improve communications skills and define social boundaries.
The following comprise the philosophical foundation of Colonial Nursery School. We believe in:
* Creativity as an essential aspect of development;
* Encouraging each child to observe and experience diversity among people and the natural world;
* Tolerance and compassion for others;
* Each individual's unique abilities enabling one to learn about oneself;
* The need to work both cooperatively and independently as the situation requires;
* Social, emotional, and academic needs being met through freedom as a means of growth, individual expression, and imagination.
Creativity is the key to our philosophy at all stages of growth and development.

Why choose a cooperative pre-school?
A cooperative pre-school offers you the opportunity to be involved in your child's schooling. By helping in your child's class on a regular basis, you get to see firsthand how your child reacts and adapts to a wide variety of learning stimuli. You will get to know your child's classmates and their parents. Serving as a member of Colonial and making important decisions about the school will form friendships and bonds that last a lifetime.
What does cooperative mean?
Being owned by our members means that parents of 3-and 4-year-old students are responsible for holding a position in the school, while families in the toddler program are invited to volunteer for a position. The level of involvement varies depending on the position. Each family is responsible for co-oping (assisting) in the classroom or toddler room. A family member must attend the general membership meetings held on the first Tuesday of each month. General meetings are held to review and vote on key issues affecting the school. Parents also discuss with the teacher or director the monthly calendar and activities at this time. It is expected that every family attend and participate in all fundraising events that directly benefit the school.
What are my parent responsibilities?
Parents are required to work at the school assisting the teacher, to attend membership meetings, and to help with fundraising. Parents of 3 and 4-year old students are required to hold a job within the school.
What will I do when I work at the school?
You will be scheduled to co-op 1 to 3 times a month depending on the number of days your class meets. Helper parents must arrive 15 minutes early to help the teacher prepare for the day. During the day your job will include various activities such as putting toys outside for recess, helping the children wash their hands, or administering snack. Your primary responsibility is to HAVE FUN WITH THE CHILDREN! There is plenty of time to help them, play with them and learn with them. Involvement on this level is what co-oping is all about.
What kind of job will I have?
Colonial Nursery School recognizes each family has different needs and capabilities and we want to make sure that your job fits your talents and interests. Some jobs, such as Executive Board positions, are extremely involved while others, such as school historian, housekeeping, or gardener, are not quite so taxing.
What are the general membership meetings about?
The general membership meets the first Tuesday of each month. A family representative is required to attend and you are allowed to miss one meeting. After that you will be fined for every missed meeting.
What about fundraising?
Colonial Nursery School strives to offer the community an affordable pre-school program. In order to keep tuition relatively low, the school depends on the cooperation of all members to support the fundraising activities. We have one major fundraising event each year - A Raffle/Silent Auction. We also have smaller fundraisers such as school photographs, coupon book sales, and others as needed. All proceeds go to the school. See the fundraising section of this website for more information.
The school does not have any religious affiliations.
